BFX 2017: Outpost VFX Founder Talks Film, Commercials & Culture
Duncan McWilliam presents key Outpost VFX projects at one of Europe's leading visual effects events
"Our artists are happier. In turn, our clients are happier."
That was the message conveyed by Outpost VFX founder Duncan McWilliam at BFX Festival 2017, which was held here in Bournemouth last week.
Welcoming delegates and speakers from around the world for a bigger and bolder fifth year, BFX featured panel discussions, VFX masterclasses and presentations from a wide array of expert speakers.
We were delighted to be invited to speak at the event, and Duncan took to the stage armed to the teeth with anecdotes, advice and a fibreglass shark head to speak to a large afternoon crowd at the festival.
As well as breaking down two of our key recent projects – record-breaking shark thriller 47 Meters Down and our award-winning Domestos commercial for MullenLowe – Duncan spent some time outlining our mission for the coming years and our progressive and passionate stance on fair treatment of all visual effects staff.
"We were extremely excited to be a part of this year’s BFX Festival," said Duncan. "Our links with the festival team and the NCCA at Bournemouth University are hugely important to us, and as we continue to grow we relish opportunities to share our work with our peers and the next generation of artists as they come through.
"It has been a pleasure to be on the festival bill next to other studios that we greatly admire, and hopefully we offered new and interesting perspectives on how we approach VFX and animation for feature film, broadcast and commercials.
"As we are also based in Bournemouth, BFX was the perfect occasion to highlight some of our most interesting recent work and put forward the case that, although we admire Soho, we’re proving that you don’t necessarily need to be in London to deliver world-class visual effects internationally.”
In addition to Duncan's talk, our MD Danny Duke was invited to host the BFX Awards ceremony with Tom Box from BlueZoo.
